About the city, What to see & do
City rich of history and historical buildings and ancient streets, outstanding museums and galleries, Copenhagen is a lively and modern city and a great capital city. A round trip of the inner city is easily managed on foot. The medieval city and its old, cobbled streets provide an evocative backdrop to a thriving cultural scene, with its art galleries, museums, music and theatres.
From August to June the Royal Theatre and the Royal Opera House puts on opera and ballet of international standard. The programmes in concert halls and other venues are always high calibre, while in July, the time of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival www.jazzfestival.dk, the squares and side streets throb with the rhythms of superb music.
Public transport is safe, reliable, clean and inexpensive. Both trains and buses run frequently and efficiently. The airport-to-city-centre rail link is 13-minute ride and costs DKK 28,50 (remember to purchase your ticket before getting on the train).
Shopping
Copenhagen's largest shopping area is centred on Europe's longest pedestrian shopping street, Strøget, and the streets that surround it. International titans like Prada, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton, Cerutti, Mulberry, Chanel, Marlboro, Karen Millen, Hermès and Boss are represented there, but if you are shopping on a budget, head further down the pedestrian street, where you will find excellent value clothes in shops like Hennes & Mauritz. Strøget is also a popular venue for street performers.
Canal Tours
A tour on the old canals is one of the biggest tourist attractions and an experience you should not miss. The boats take you through all parts of the old city and pass many of the most famous sights. DFDF Canal boats and Netto Boats take you for a 60-minute guided tour of the harbour and the canals, while The Water Bus sails along and between the coasts of the water separating the two islands of Sealand and Amager and it's a hop-on hop-off bus.
The Little Mermaid
Made in bronze, 165 centimetres tall, 175 kilos. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Denmark and one of the most photographed statues in the world. Hans Christian Andersen wrote a fairy tale about The Little Mermaid
and published it in 1837. It is the story of the Little Mermaid who saves the life of a shipwrecked prince and sets off on a perilous quest to win his love becoming human for him but lousing her voice. The statue of Copenhagen has been commissioned to Edvard Eriksen who represented her at the moment when her fish tail is being transformed into legs, and presented to the city of Copenhagen in August 1913. The sculptor modelled the Little Mermaid after Eline, his wife.
The statue of the Little Mermaid has been "attacked" several times: in 1961-1963-1964-1976-1984-1990-1998-2003. She's has been decapitated, covered in paint and even removed from her stone and pushed into the water.
Kronborg Castle
Kronborg Castle is one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles. It is situated on the sea in Elsinore (Helsingør), the Castle was built between 1574- 85 during the reign of King Frederik II to keep and eye on and collect taxes from ships sailing through the narrow sound between Denmark and Sweden. This so-called Øresund-tax was for a long period an important income for Denmark.
Frederik II's Kronborg is also a monumental military fortress surrounded by major fortifications with bastions. Known all over the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is also the most famous castle in Denmark and is visited each year by about 200,000 Danes and tourists.
