About the city, What to see & do
Roskilde is a modern and bustling city with a charming market town atmosphere. The old town centre has been renovated, and the pedestrian street makes it easy to explore this lovely town and at the same time offers new shop experiences. The city first asset goes back to the Viking Age around the 990s, becoming soon a densely populated area. It is one of the oldest city in Denmark. Roskilde is famous for the Viking Ship Museum and its Cathedral, burial place of the Danish Royalty.
Roskilde Festival
It is the biggest music festival in Northern Europe and draws people from all over the world. Each year, more than 175 acts perform on seven stages during the Festival, running from Thursday to Sunday.

Situated by Roskilde Fjord, the exhibition shows five original Viking ships from the 11th century, and tells of shipbuilding, life at sea and Viking times. In the Harbour you can see the big collection of reconstructed Viking ships and traditional Nordic vessels. From May to September, it is possible to take part in a sailing trip which will last about 50 minutes. There is also an archaeology workshop where you can see how the parts of the wreck are cleaned and measured.

An impressive cathedral and one of the most remarkable buildings in Denmark, inscribed on the World Heritage List. The Cathedral is a perfect example of 800 years of Danish architecture. Since the 15th century the Cathedral has been the favourite burial place of the Royal Family. 39 Danish kings and queens have been laid to rest here, and in 1985 a new royal burial place was built by the North West corner of the church. The impressive organ is from 1554.
Roskilde Palace
The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the Royal Palace, which is one of the most eminent examples of Baroque style in Denmark. Designed by the Danish architect Laurits de Thurah and built in 1733. It has been a bishop's palace since 1923 and welcomes museums and exhibitions.
